Nepal CRS Company, in partnership with Family Health Division - GoN, Nepal Fertility Care Center (NFCC) and with financial support from Venture Strategies Health Development (VSHD) began pilot initiatives of Matri Surakchya Chakki, in Bardiya district through the Sangini Franchising Network. The pilot initiative began after the briefing session on 20 April 2009 conducted at Thakurdhwara Village Development Committee of Bardiya district.
The District Health Officer (DHO) of Bardiya district Dr. Bal Bahadhur Mahat inaugurated the program. The briefing session was conducted amidst stakeholders with representatives from various organizations: WWF, Health Post Office, Red Cross, Park Community Health Center, Women Credit Groups, Bardia National Park Conservation Trust and local people.
The Chief guest Dr. Bal Bahadur Mahat highlighted the importance of Matri Surakshya Chakki in reducing the maternal mortality rate in Bardiya district. He stressed on the use of the product and strongly suggested the use of the product only after delivery, and further cautioned against its use during pregnancy. He requested all the concerned stakeholders of Bardiya district to support CRS in making the program a success, while he assured his full support for the successful implementation of the program.
The two and half hour briefing session included a powerpoint presentation by CRS that focused on the need of launching “Misoprostol” through the “Sangini Social Franchising Network” in Bardiya district as a pilot initiative for the management of post partum hemorrhage. The presentation concluded with an exchange of questions, feedback and suggestions from the participants. The program concluded with a vote of thanks from the Field Director of Nepal CRS Company Mr. Rohit Shrestha.
CRS has formally started the distribution of “Matri Surakchya Chakki” through 40 Sangini Franchising Outlets of Bardiya district on April 20 2009 targeting Married Women of Reproductive Age (MWRAs) groups. The campaign has already been extended to four other districts.
